Dadhichi
(Skanda Purana)

Dadhichi is one of the greatest saints, who had sacrificed everything for the welfare of the humanity. Always there used to be a battle between deities and demons. To conquer the heavenly kingdom of the deities and occupy it forever, the demons planned a conspiracy to rob the weapons of the deities. Demons started robbing the powerful weapons of the deities one by one without their knowledge. After some time, when the deities came to know about the loss of their weapons, they started searching a safe place for hiding them .
Indra and other deities met Dadhichi Rishi and pleaded with him to keep all their weapons in safe custody under his own supervision. They also told him that they would take back their weapons whenever needed. The kind-hearted Dadhichi Rishi happily accepted the request immediately and started looking after the weapons with utmost care.
The deities became free from tension after handing over the weapons to the Maharshi. Even after long time, the deities did not return to take their weapons from Dadhichi. Meanwhile, Dadhichi thought of undertaking a world trip to visit all the centres of pilgrimage. But the responsibility of safekeeping of the weapons was still with him.. Therefore, he burnt all the weapons into ashes and swallowed the whole of it. By doing this, the power of the weapons, in a subtle form pervaded into Maharshi’s whole body and his body became very powerful. After that, Dadhichi along with his wife left for the pilgrimage.
Meanwhile, the tortures of a demon by the name, Vritasura were on the increase. But deities had no weapons with them to attack Vritasura. So, the deities approached Dadhichi and requested him to give back their weapons. Dadhichi explained everything about the weapons and requested the deities to come to him again when his wife was not present in the home. Accordingly, the deities came back again to Dadhichi when his wife was not at home.
Dadichi then created fire with the power of Yoga for self-immolation. He askedthe deities to make the weapons from his bones after his death and further told them that no sin would be attributed to them by such an act. Saying so, he immolated himself in the fire. Then the deities made different weapons with the bones of Dadhichi. The spinal cord of Dadhichi was used for making a powerful weapon called VAJRAYUDH, which is the weapon of Indra. The power of the weapons of the deities increased multi-fold due to Maharshi’s yoga power.

Spiritual Significance: – Dadhichi sacrificed his complete life for the benefit of the world. Even his bones were used for making weapons for fighting the demons. Similarly Baba tells His children to happily surrender everything that they have, for Godly Service, be it Body, Mind, Money, (Tan, Man, and Dhan) Time, Thoughts, Words or Deeds. Everything of ours should be used for the world benefaction.
